Following The Leaf
A Journey with Jeff Fuchs
Introduction to the Series
What if a single cup of tea could carry the scent of a mountain, the silence of snow, the laughter of elders, and the ghost of a caravan long gone?
In this four-part series, we journey alongside Jeff Fuchs — explorer, tea hunter, oral historian — whose life has been shaped by ancient paths and fading voices. For over two decades, Jeff has walked the Tea Horse Road and its tributaries through the Himalayas, tracing the movement of one of the world's most traded and mythologized leaves.
We met at the Paris Tea Festival. The conversation began with a question about romanticising tea — and unfolded into something far deeper: a meditation on time, labour, culture, and continuity. From the cold, wind-bitten trade routes of Yunnan and Tibet to youth-led tea circles in Hawaii, Jeff brings us face to face with a truth often lost in glossy cups: that tea is not only ceremony — it is survival, memory, and movement.
Each part of this series reveals a layer of that truth:
-
the philosophy and patience within a single bowl of tea,
-
the hard-earned labour behind every sip,
-
the wildness and danger that built the trade routes,
-
and the role of tea in shaping the future — not just of commerce, but of culture.
This is not just an interview. It’s an unfolding trail of stories, carried by wind, steeped in fire, and poured out slowly. One cup of tea at a time.
